Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Chile renting a car in Italy

Can I drive and rent a car in Italy with my Chilean driver's license, or do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP)?

As a short-term tourist from Chile, you can legally drive in Italy with your valid Chilean license due to a mutual recognition agreement. However, it's strongly recommended to obtain an IDP as a certified translation, as some rental staff may not be aware of the agreement and may ask for it.

Where can I get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in Chile and what documents do I need?

You can apply for an IDP at the Automóvil Club de Chile. Bring your valid Chilean license, national ID card, passport-size photo, and pay the required fee. Check their website for the latest requirements and office hours.

What essential documents do I need to rent a car in Italy?

You will need: your passport, your original Chilean driver's license (preferably with at least 1 year of driving history), the IDP (strongly recommended), and an international credit card in the main driver's name.

Is there a minimum passport validity for renting a car in Italy?

Yes. Your passport should be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the Schengen Area. It’s generally recommended to have at least six months’ validity from your planned departure from Schengen.

Why must the credit card be under the main driver's name?

This is a global standard. The rental contract and vehicle liability are tied to the main driver, who must provide a credit card in their own name. Cards under another person (even a spouse) are usually not accepted.

Can I use a debit card or cash for the rental deposit?

Most Italian car rental companies do NOT accept debit cards or cash for the deposit. You must use a credit card with sufficient available credit for a pre-authorization hold.

Does the credit card need to be a chip card, and what credit limit is recommended?

A chip-and-magnetic-stripe credit card is strongly recommended. The credit limit should be at least €1000–1500, as deposits usually range from €500–1200 depending on the vehicle and rental company.

Can I add extra drivers? What are the requirements?

Yes, you can add extra drivers at pickup. All additional drivers must be present with the same documents as the main driver (passport, license, IDP). An extra driver fee usually applies.

Why do you recommend booking through QEEQ for car rentals in Italy?

QEEQ is a leading global car rental comparison platform, friendly to international travelers. It offers: one-stop price comparison, Chinese interface and customer service, exclusive insurance products, and transparent booking processes to avoid hidden fees.

How far in advance should I book my car rental on QEEQ?

At least 1–2 months in advance, especially during peak season (June–September) or holidays. Early booking secures availability and better rates.

How do I start my booking on QEEQ?

Visit the QEEQ website or app, enter your pickup/return locations, dates, and times, search for available cars, use filters to narrow your selection, choose your vehicle, fill in your details, select insurance, pay the booking fee, and receive your confirmation and rental voucher.

Are automatic cars common in Italy and how do I choose between manual and automatic?

Manual cars are more common and cheaper in Italy. If you only drive automatics, filter for 'automatic' on QEEQ and book early, as automatics are limited and pricier, especially among smaller cars.

Which type of car should two travelers with little luggage choose?

A compact or economy car (e.g., Fiat 500, Ford Fiesta) is ideal for two people with minimal luggage. These are convenient for navigating narrow Italian city streets and parking.

Can I rent a car in one city and return it in another in Italy?

Yes. Select different pickup and drop-off locations on QEEQ. The platform will automatically calculate any 'one-way fee' that may apply.

How do I book a child safety seat on QEEQ?

During the booking process, add a child seat in the extras section. Choose the appropriate type based on your child’s age and weight. Pay the fee at pickup. Book early as quantities are limited.

What should I do after completing my QEEQ booking?

You’ll receive a confirmation email and rental voucher. Read all details carefully, especially pickup location, required documents, and contact info. Print the voucher and save an electronic copy.

What does the total rental fee on QEEQ usually include?

The QEEQ total price typically includes: rental fee, basic insurance (CDW, TP, third-party liability), taxes, and unlimited mileage (usually). Extras like fuel, GPS, child seats, additional drivers, young driver fees, or one-way fees are not included.

What is the 'excess' or 'deductible' on collision damage waiver (CDW) and theft protection (TP)?

The excess is the maximum amount you must pay out of pocket in case of damage or theft, even if you have basic insurance. For example, if the excess is €1000, you pay up to €1000, and insurance covers the rest.

What is QEEQ's 'Full Protection' (super insurance) and should I buy it?

Strongly recommended. QEEQ's Full Protection covers the rental company’s excess, and extends coverage to tires, glass, undercarriage, etc. In case of an incident, you pay the rental company, then claim reimbursement from QEEQ with proper documents.

If I buy QEEQ’s Full Protection, do I still need to leave a deposit at the counter?

Yes. QEEQ's insurance is third-party and not directly recognized by the rental desk, so you must still allow a deposit hold on your credit card as per standard procedure.

How should I respond if the rental desk tries to sell me their own 'full insurance'?

If you already have QEEQ’s Full Protection, politely decline the rental company’s insurance. You can say: 'Grazie, ho già acquistato un'assicurazione completa tramite la mia agenzia di prenotazione.' (Thank you, I’ve already purchased full insurance through my booking platform.)

How much is the typical deposit and when is it released?

Deposits are usually €500–1200, higher for premium cars. The money is held (not charged) on your credit card. If there are no issues at return, the hold is released within 1–7 days, but it may take up to 2–4 weeks to fully reappear, depending on your bank.

What extra fees should I watch out for?

Possible extra fees include: young driver fee (under 25), one-way fee, out-of-hours pickup/return, traffic fine administration fee, and optional extras like GPS or child seats. Airport surcharges are usually included in QEEQ's price.

Is the QEEQ Full Protection claims process complicated?

No. If you need to claim, retain all documents (contract, damage report, police report if any, invoices, payment proof), contact QEEQ customer service, submit documents online, and reimbursement will be processed after review.

Can I drive the rental car into neighboring countries like Switzerland or France?

Most rental companies allow travel to Western European countries but may charge a cross-border fee. Always check the car's cross-border policy on QEEQ and inform the rental desk at pickup. Do NOT leave Italy with the car without declaring this.

Will I pay the same amount at pickup as shown on my QEEQ voucher?

Yes, as long as you don’t add extra services or upgrades at the counter. Always check the invoice before signing to ensure no unwanted charges are included.

How do I find my rental car desk at the airport?

Look for 'Rent-a-Car' or 'Autonoleggio' signs in the arrivals hall. Most rental counters are in a dedicated area. Your QEEQ voucher will have specific instructions.

What is the typical process for picking up a rental car?

Queue for service, present all required documents, confirm booking details, review and sign the contract, pay any outstanding fees, have your deposit held, receive the keys and parking location, and proceed to inspect your car.

What should I check on the rental contract before signing?

Verify personal and vehicle details, pickup/return times and locations, fuel policy, and most importantly, fee breakdown. Ensure there are no extra charges you didn’t agree to.

What’s the most important step after receiving the car keys?

Thoroughly inspect the car, take clear photos and videos of all existing damage (scratches, dents), and ensure all are marked on the damage report. Have staff confirm and sign off on any additional findings.

What should I check inside the car?

Check the odometer, fuel gauge, air conditioning, radio, lights, spare tire, and tools. Familiarize yourself with the controls for wipers, indicators, etc.

What does 'full-to-full' fuel policy mean?

You receive the car with a full tank and must return it full. This is the fairest policy and is recommended. Choose this policy when booking on QEEQ.

What should I do if the car isn’t full of fuel at pickup?

Immediately inform the counter staff and have them note the actual fuel level in the contract or inspection sheet. Take a photo of the fuel gauge and odometer for proof.

If my reserved car model is unavailable, what happens?

The rental company must provide a free upgrade to a similar or better model without charging you extra.

What is a ZTL and how do I avoid entering one?

ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato) are restricted traffic zones in most Italian city centers. They are marked by circular red-bordered white signs with entry times and vehicle restrictions. Do not enter during restricted times or risk a fine. Park outside ZTLs and walk or use public transport into the center.

What if my hotel is inside a ZTL area?

Contact your hotel in advance, provide your car’s plate number, and ask them to register it with the local authorities for a temporary ZTL permit (usually just for check-in/out).

How are Italian highways (Autostrada) tolled?

Most highways are tolled. Take a ticket at entry, then pay at exit (cash or card) based on distance traveled. Use blue or white lanes, avoid the yellow 'Telepass' lanes (for locals).

What do the colors of parking lines mean in Italy?

White: usually free parking (check for restrictions). Blue: paid parking (buy a ticket at a meter and display it on your dashboard). Yellow: reserved for residents, disabled, or loading—do NOT park here.

How do I refuel and what are the words for gasoline and diesel?

Stations offer 'Servito' (attendant) and 'Fai da te/Self' (self-service). Fuel is cheaper self-service. Gasoline is 'Benzina' (green pump), diesel is 'Gasolio' (black pump). Confirm your car’s fuel type before filling.

What are the rules for driving through roundabouts (Rotonda) in Italy?

Yield to vehicles already in the roundabout before entering. Slow down, check for traffic, and proceed when safe.

What are the general speed limits in Italy?

Urban areas: 50 km/h; non-urban roads: 90 km/h; highways: 130 km/h (110 km/h in rain). Always follow posted signs, as there are many speed cameras.

What other driving rules or customs should I know about in Italy?

Drive on the right. At unmarked intersections, yield to vehicles from the right. Do not use the horn except in emergencies or on narrow mountain roads. Headlights must be on when driving outside urban areas, even during the day.

Can I use my phone for navigation while driving?

Yes, but it must be mounted on a holder. Handheld phone use while driving is illegal. Bring a car phone mount.

Is driving in southern Italy (Sicily, Naples) different?

Yes, drivers in the south tend to be more aggressive and unpredictable. Stay alert, keep a safe distance, and be decisive.

What is the usual return process for a rental car?

Follow 'Rent-a-Car Return' signs to the rental car area. Park in the designated spot. Staff will inspect the car for damage, fuel, and mileage. Confirm everything is fine, sign the return document, and get a final invoice.

What should I do before returning the car?

Refuel near the return location and keep the receipt. Clean the car if excessively dirty. Check for personal belongings.

What should I do in case of an accident?

Stay calm. Ensure everyone is safe. Call emergency (118 for medical, 112 for police). Don’t move the cars unless necessary. Take photos, exchange details with other parties, fill out the accident report form, and contact the rental company immediately.

What if the car breaks down (e.g., flat tire)?

Do not attempt repairs yourself. Call the 24/7 roadside assistance number provided by the rental company (usually on your contract or the car window). They will send help or replace the car.

What if I receive a traffic fine after returning home?

The fine will be sent to the rental company first. They’ll charge an administrative fee to your credit card, then forward your details to authorities. You’ll receive the official fine by mail and should pay it as instructed to avoid future travel issues.

How long does it take for my credit card deposit to be released after returning the car?

If all is in order, the deposit hold is released by the rental company within 1–7 business days, but your bank may take up to 2–4 weeks to unblock the amount. If not released after a month, contact your bank and the rental company.
