They tried to make me sign a paper that I would be have to pay for the $29,000 cost of the vehicle if anything happened to it that they saw no insurance purchased for this rental. When I refused they charged me $137 insurance fees. This $137 was more than 2x the cost of the insured rental. They did not have WiFi available so it was hard to debate the counter rep to see the fine print so they bullied me into getting the additional coverage. This started my vacation off poorly.

I declined this package, when I get to the car I rented, the fuel is already at full level.

MEX is the largest car rental company in Mexico. Every step of the renting, picking up, and returning process was very smooth, professional, efficient, and accurate. I bought the QEEQ Super Peace of Mind full insurance (insured by a domestic insurance company). The rental company didn't make things difficult for me or recommend any additional insurance. There is a MEX shuttle bus outside the airport. Every staff member was serious and responsible, with a very good attitude. We arrived at the rental hall at around 3:30 p.m. There were four counters open, with two customers waiting ahead of us. I waited about 10 minutes to start the process, which took around 10 minutes. Picking up and inspecting the car took about 10 minutes. Overall, very satisfied.

The car rental process at Cancun Airport is quite efficient, and the service is very enthusiastic. There were no unnecessary upsells or difficulties. I think the main reason is the high traffic here, they neither have time nor need to make money by being difficult. Additionally, all the rental companies are lined up together, so the competition is fierce. If they have a bad attitude, they'll lose.

The service was very poor. They lure you with low prices and then forcibly sell you expensive insurance. I initially booked with Mex but canceled after seeing bad reviews and chose Mas instead, thinking a higher rating would mean fewer issues. However, upon arriving at the store, I realized both companies are connected. They found all sorts of faults, claiming my driver's license was new when in fact it was a renewal. After lengthy negotiations with the rental company's customer service, they finally agreed to give me the car but only if I bought their insurance (despite already having full coverage from the platform). They wouldn't listen to the platform's communication either. At that point, I had no choice but to comply. Additionally, they charged an unfavorable exchange rate for the insurance. I advise others to avoid this rental company. Online reviews are overwhelmingly negative, and it's not worth taking the risk; you could be the next person to get ripped off.

The Mexican staff member at MAS Car Rental was terrible. She made things difficult just because I'm Asian. First, the shuttle bus stop was hard to find; remember to look for the sign above with 03 after you exit. This might have been my own mistake, so future customers should take note. Then, from the time I showed my booking confirmation to when I finally got the car, she created all possible difficulties. She tried to make me buy full insurance even though I already had it. She wanted proof of third-party liability insurance, which I found out from the rental company's customer service was something they should provide and I don’t need to buy. She claimed my documents were only in Chinese and not in Spanish (which was a lie), so I had to send her the confirmation email on the spot. She said she wouldn't accept my credit card because it was opened in January, and they only accept cards open for more than a year (customer service confirmed this was a lie too). She then took at least 20 minutes to read my bilingual booking and wouldn't let me talk to customer service (thinking I was recording her). Finally, only after I got really angry did she complete the credit card process. Can you imagine it took 1.2 hours? I've driven in over ten countries and didn't expect the worst service to be in Mexico. Future customers should be aware. PS: No problems with police and driving around the Yucatán Peninsula was very easy.

When I complained to the car rental platform, MEX Rental Company ignored my complaint citing a credit card discrepancy. So, if you choose MEX Rental Company, you need both courage and luck!

Two weeks traveling in Mexico led to two interactions with the police. The first occurred in Mexico City when driving onto the highway; we were stopped by the police, who claimed our license plate was not allowed to travel that day. They attempted to fine us $200 and threatened to hold the car for two days. Communication was difficult, but after much gesturing, they agreed to let us leave for $100 without a receipt. I paid and got away. The second encounter happened in Cancun. After driving three hours to Pink Beach, we were returning late when we saw police inspecting cars on the roadside. We were stopped, and the officer, speaking limited English, accused us of speeding. I explained we were driving with the flow of traffic and didn’t notice other cars being stopped, but it didn’t matter. After asking us to pull over, another armed officer stood facing us at the car. The police began negotiating the fine and consequences for the infraction. Realizing it was another shakedown, I handed them 500 pesos. They gestured it wasn’t enough, so I handed over another 500. The officer smiled, assured us there would be no record of violations or need to go to the police station, and wished us a good night. At Cancun airport when picking up the rental car, I was told there were no cars available and my reservation was canceled. I approached the manager, who first claimed they hadn’t received my reservation and later said the reserved car wasn’t available. I was forced to book a new reservation at twice the original price. I’ve traveled extensively through Europe and North America, usually opting for self-driving trips, but I’ve never faced situations like this. Despite the unpleasantness, we avoided serious consequences, and it became an informative experience for my kids as they witnessed the reality of the world firsthand. It was an unexpected lesson in understanding disparities between cultures and levels of development firsthand. On a positive note, our stay at The Westin Resort in Cancun was excellent, with great location and facilities. The new year vacation ended happily!
