Can Brazilian Citizens Drive in Costa Rica with a Rental Car?

Yes, Brazilian travelers can drive rental cars in Costa Rica if they meet the age, licence, ID, and credit‑card requirements. You must carry your passport, valid Brazilian driving licence with an International Driving Permit, and pay with a physical credit card in the main driver’s name.

  • Form of ID:

Foreign renters must present a valid passport at the rental counter.

  • Driving licence:

The main and any additional drivers must hold a full, physical driving licence with no major endorsements, issued for at least 1–2 years depending on vehicle/category. Accepted driving licence include:
    • Original driving licence + International Driving Permit (IDP).

  • Accepted cards:

Payment must be made with physical credit cards in the full name of the main driver. Accepted cards (vary by offer) include Visa, MasterCard, Diners Club, Discover, and American Express. Some offers allow only Visa and MasterCard. E‑vouchers or printed vouchers are generally accepted where stated.

  • Age requirements:

Depending on the specific offer, the permitted driving age ranges between 18–99 years. Common age bands include: 25–80, 21–99, 21–80, 21–69, and 21–75. Young driver surcharges may apply on certain offers: for example, drivers aged 21–24 may pay about US$50 per rental, and drivers aged 18–20 about US$10 per day. Check the exact age band and fee shown for your chosen car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Brazil renting a car in Costa Rica

How far in advance should I book a car for my trip to Costa Rica?

Ideally, book your rental car at least 2 to 3 months in advance, especially if traveling during high season (December to April) or holidays. This ensures better prices and availability of the car type you need, like a 4x4.

Do I really need a 4x4 or is a regular sedan enough?

It depends on your itinerary. If you’ll stay on main roads between San José and popular Pacific beaches, a sedan is enough. But for areas like Monteverde, Osa Peninsula, or remote hotels and waterfalls, a 4x4 is essential. When in doubt, choose a 4x4 for more freedom and safety.

What’s the best way to find deals and book my car?

The safest and most efficient way is to use comparison platforms. I highly recommend using QEEQ, as it often displays all information clearly, including insurance, avoiding unpleasant surprises at pickup.

Is it better to rent a manual or automatic car?

Manual cars are usually cheaper, but Costa Rica’s roads have many hills and winding turns. If you’re not confident driving a manual on steep inclines, the comfort of an automatic is worth the extra cost.

What is the average daily cost of a car rental in Costa Rica, including insurance?

Prices vary greatly. An economy car can start at $5 USD per day online, but after mandatory insurance, the real daily cost jumps to $50–$80 USD in low season and $70–$120+ USD in high season for a mid-size SUV. Be wary of very low prices—they rarely include all costs.

Should I rent a GPS from the rental company?

No. The best GPS for Costa Rica is the Waze app, which works perfectly for navigation and real-time alerts. The next best is Google Maps. Buy a local SIM card (eSIM or physical) at the airport for unlimited internet.

Can I pick up the car in one city and return it in another (one-way rental)?

Yes, most rental companies offer this, such as picking up in San José and dropping off in Liberia. There is usually an extra fee, between $50 and $150 USD. Check this fee when booking.

Are diesel cars common and more economical?

Most rental cars in Costa Rica use gasoline ('regular'). Diesel is more common in larger pickups or vans. Gasoline is easy to find throughout the country, so don’t worry about this.

Should I book online or can I rent when I arrive at the airport?

Always book online! Renting on the spot is a recipe for higher prices and the risk of no available cars, especially 4x4 models. Early booking gives you better choices and conditions.

How can I make sure I’m booking all-inclusive to avoid surprises?

When using a platform like QEEQ, carefully read the 'Rate Details' or 'What’s Included' section. Look for terms like 'Third Party Liability (TPL/SLI) included.' If it’s not clear, assume you’ll be charged for mandatory insurance at the counter and budget accordingly.

Is my Brazilian driver's license (CNH) valid in Costa Rica? Do I need an International Driving Permit (PID)?

Yes, your Brazilian CNH is valid for driving in Costa Rica for up to 90 days as a tourist. The PID is not legally required but can help as a supporting document, since it’s in Spanish and can ease communication with police.

What other documents do I need to present at the rental desk?

You’ll need: 1) your physical (not digital) valid CNH, 2) your original passport with entry stamp, 3) an international credit card in the main driver’s name.

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

Most companies require drivers to be at least 25 years old. Some allow drivers 21–24, but charge a daily 'young driver fee,' which can be expensive.

Can I use a debit card or someone else’s credit card for the security deposit?

No. You must use an international credit card with the main driver’s name on it. Debit, prepaid, or third-party cards are not accepted for the deposit.

How much is the security deposit held on my card?

The amount varies depending on the insurance you select. With only basic insurance, the hold may be $1,000–$3,000 USD. With premium insurance from the rental company, it drops to $100–$500 USD. Check your credit limit!

Can I add an additional driver? What are the requirements?

Yes, you can add drivers. They must be present at pickup and show a valid CNH and passport. There’s a daily fee, usually $10–$15 USD per additional driver.

Will the rental company ask for my return ticket to Brazil?

It’s not standard procedure, but they need to confirm your tourist status. They always check your passport entry stamp.

What is the SLI/TPL/LIS insurance everyone talks about? Is it really mandatory?

Yes, it is 100% mandatory by law in Costa Rica and cannot be waived. SLI (Supplemental Liability Insurance), TPL (Third Party Liability), or LIS (Liability Insurance Supplement) all refer to third-party liability insurance. It covers damages you may cause to others or property, but not to the rental car itself.

My credit card offers rental car insurance. Can I decline all the rental company’s insurance?

No! Your credit card usually covers CDW (Collision Damage Waiver), which is for damage to the rental car. It NEVER covers the mandatory third-party liability (SLI/TPL). You may refuse the CDW with some bureaucracy, but you cannot decline the SLI/TPL.

What is CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) or LDW (Loss Damage Waiver)?

This insurance covers collision, theft, or loss of the rental car. It usually includes a deductible—the maximum you’d pay if there’s damage, with the insurer covering the rest.

I want to use my credit card’s CDW. How does it work?

You must bring a letter from your bank/card issuer in English or Spanish confirming coverage. Be ready for a much higher deposit ($2,000–$5,000 USD). If there’s damage, you pay the rental company first, then claim reimbursement from your card—this can take time.

Why is the online price so low but it triples at the counter?

Most online quotes from less transparent sites omit the cost of mandatory SLI/TPL insurance. They lure you with a $5 USD daily rate, then add $20–$30 USD daily for insurance and other fees at the counter.

What is the safest and least stressful insurance strategy for Brazilians?

To avoid headaches, it’s best to buy the rental company’s package that includes both the mandatory SLI/TPL and basic CDW. This greatly reduces the security deposit and simplifies issues. It costs more upfront, but risk and stress are much lower.

What about the 'full coverage' or 'zero deductible' insurance the counter staff offer?

These optional insurances cover things CDW doesn’t, like tires, glass, windshield, and roadside assistance. If you’ll drive on dirt roads, where flat tires are common, consider this extra coverage for peace of mind.

Do the names for mandatory insurance vary between companies? How can I be sure?

Yes, names like TPL, SLI, LIS, API all refer to the same required liability coverage. Don’t focus on the acronym, just confirm you’re getting the 'mandatory third-party liability insurance.'

My reservation says 'taxes and fees included.' Does that include mandatory insurance?

Usually not. 'Taxes and fees' refer to airport and government taxes, not insurance. Unless it specifically says 'Third Party Liability (TPL/SLI) included,' expect to pay for it at the counter.

Is the cost of mandatory insurance fixed or does it vary by rental company?

It’s not fixed. Each company sets its own rate, usually between $15 and $30 USD per day, depending on the car category.

Are rental counters inside the airport terminals (SJO or LIR)?

No. Most rental offices are nearby, 5–10 minutes from the terminal. Staff will meet you with signs and guide you to a free shuttle to the rental lot.

What should I inspect on the car before leaving the rental lot?

Inspect EVERYTHING! Take photos and videos from all angles. Check for scratches, dents, tire condition (including the spare and tools), windshield chips, air conditioning, wipers, and lights. Ensure all pre-existing damage is marked on the inspection form.

What extra fees might I be charged at pickup?

Watch for vehicle license fees, airport fees (even if the office is offsite), environmental fees, and upsells like GPS or extra insurance. Ask: 'Hay alguna otra tasa obligatoria además de esta?' (Are there any other mandatory fees besides this one?)

Is it better to pay rental and deposit in US Dollars (USD) or in Colones (CRC)?

Rental agencies operate and price everything in USD. It’s easiest to pay in USD with your credit card. Use Colones for daily expenses like tolls and markets.

How will language work at the counter if I only speak Portuguese or some 'Portunhol'?

Airport rental staff are used to tourists and generally speak good English. Slow 'Portunhol' is often understood. Having Google Translate on your phone helps with technical terms, especially about insurance.

What if the car model I reserved isn’t available?

The rental company must provide a car of the same or higher category (upgrade) at no extra cost. Never accept a lower category (downgrade) without a significant price reduction.

How much time should I allow for the pickup process?

Be patient. Between waiting in line, insurance explanations, paperwork, car inspection, and installing car seats (if needed), the process can take 1–2 hours. Don’t schedule tight appointments after your arrival.

Will they give me the car with a full tank?

Yes, the standard policy is 'full-to-full.' You receive the car full and must return it full to avoid inflated refueling fees. Check the fuel gauge before leaving.

What are the roads like in Costa Rica? Is it dangerous to drive?

Roads are mixed. Main highways are well-paved, but secondary roads to the best spots can be dirt, potholed, narrow, and without shoulders. Drive calmly, pay attention, and enjoy the scenery. The 'Pura Vida' approach applies to driving—no rush.

How do gas stations work?

Service is always full-serve. An attendant (bombero) will fill your tank. Just pull up and say 'Lleno con regular, por favor' (Fill with regular gas, please). You can pay with card or cash (USD or Colones).

Are there many tolls? How do I pay?

Yes, there are some tolls on main highways near San José, but they’re cheap. Always have some local cash (Colones) in coins or small notes, as not all tolls accept cards or dollars.

How does parking work? Is it safe to leave the car on the street?

In cities and beaches, local 'car watchers' (cuidacarros) help you park and watch your car for a tip (500–1,000 Colones, about 1–2 USD). It’s a local practice and worth paying for peace of mind. Never leave valuables visible in the car.

What are the main traffic rules I should know?

Drive on the right. Speed limits are in km/h and strictly enforced by police and cameras. Seatbelts are mandatory for all. Using your phone while driving is prohibited. Fines are expensive.

What if the police stop me?

Stay calm and polite. Show your CNH, passport, and car documents. Important: traffic fines are NEVER paid directly to the police on the road. They’re paid later at a bank or charged by the rental company. If a police officer asks for cash, it’s a bribe—refuse politely and ask for an official ticket.

Is it safe to drive at night?

Avoid driving at night, especially in rural areas. Lighting is poor or nonexistent, roads have many unmarked potholes, and animals or people may be on the road. Plan to arrive before sunset, which is around 6pm year-round.

What are single-lane bridges and how do I cross them?

They’re common. Before the bridge, you’ll see a sign. One direction has a 'Ceda el Paso' (Yield) sign—drivers on that side must wait for oncoming traffic to cross. If no cars are coming, you can go.

I found a river crossing the road. What should I do?

If you’re not in a sturdy 4x4 and unsure of the depth, DO NOT CROSS. It’s best to wait for a local car to go first or find an alternative route. Losing a few hours is better than losing your rental car.

What’s the average travel speed? Is Waze time reliable?

Waze estimates are usually accurate. Average speed on secondary roads is low, around 40–50 km/h, due to curves, villages, and road conditions. A 150 km trip can easily take 3–4 hours.

What should I do in case of a car accident?

The golden rule in Costa Rica: DO NOT MOVE THE CAR, even if blocking traffic. Call 911, then your rental company’s emergency number. Wait for the transit police and insurance inspector. Moving the car can void your insurance.

What if I get a flat tire in the middle of nowhere?

Use the spare tire. Then call your rental company’s roadside assistance number. Note that basic CDW insurance usually doesn’t cover tires or glass unless you bought extra protection.

I received a traffic ticket. How do I pay?

You won’t need to go to a bank. The rental company will be notified and will charge the fine plus an admin fee to your credit card on file.

What is the car return process like?

Arrive at the rental office well in advance (at least 3–4 hours before your flight). They’ll inspect the car closely, comparing to your check-out photos and notes. If all is fine, they close the contract. Request a 'zero damages' receipt. Remember to refuel before returning.

How long does it take for the security deposit to be released on my card?

After the rental company releases the hold, it depends on your bank in Brazil. Usually, the limit is restored within 7–21 business days.
