Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for travelers from Hungary renting a car in Malta

Is it really necessary for Hungarian travelers to rent a car in Malta?

It depends on your travel style. If you want to explore remote beaches, cliffs, or inland villages not easily accessible by public transport, renting a car offers maximum flexibility. However, if you stay mainly in Valletta, Sliema, or St. Julian's, public transportation is sufficient. For those wanting full control over their itinerary, renting is the best option.

Is driving in Malta left-hand or right-hand? What does this mean for Hungarian drivers?

Malta drives on the left side of the road, with the steering wheel on the right. This is the opposite of Hungary. You'll need to adapt: shift with your left hand, check mirrors accordingly, and always remind yourself to 'keep left'.

Is it safe for right-hand side drivers from Hungary to drive in Malta?

Yes, if you stay alert and take time to adapt. Practice in a quiet area before heading into traffic, and consider renting an automatic car to ease the transition.

What type of car should I rent for driving in Malta?

Compact or small cars are strongly recommended, as Maltese roads are often narrow and parking is tight. Models like Kia Picanto or Peugeot 208 are ideal.

Should I rent a manual or automatic transmission car in Malta?

Automatic is highly recommended, especially for those not used to left-hand driving. It minimizes distractions and makes adapting to local traffic much easier.

Do I need an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a Hungarian license holder?

No. A valid Hungarian driving license is accepted in Malta, as both countries are in the EU. Just ensure your license is valid for the entire rental period.

How much does car rental cost in Malta?

Prices vary by season and car type. In high season, expect €40-70 per day for a small car. Off-season rates can drop to €20-40. Prices usually exclude full insurance.

What hidden fees should I watch out for when renting a car in Malta?

Look out for extra costs such as full insurance upgrades, young or senior driver fees, additional driver charges, child seat rental, GPS rental, fuel service, or one-way drop-off fees.

When is the best time to book a rental car in Malta?

Book as early as possible, especially for peak summer months. Reserving 1-2 months ahead ensures better rates and availability, particularly for automatic compact cars.

Should I rent a car for my entire Malta trip or just part of it?

A smart approach is to use public transport in Valletta/Sliema for the first days, then rent a car for 3-4 days to explore the rest of the island and Gozo. This is cost-effective and avoids driving in the most congested areas.

How do I book a rental car in Malta? Any recommended platform?

Use QEEQ for booking. It's a comprehensive platform that allows you to compare prices and coverage, and its full insurance packages are cost-effective and clear.

What documents do I need to provide during booking and pick-up?

Online booking requires your details and payment. At pick-up, show your valid Hungarian license, passport or ID, main driver's international credit card, and your QEEQ booking voucher.

What do CDW and SCDW insurance terms mean?

CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) is basic insurance included in rental rates, but comes with a high excess. SCDW (Super Collision Damage Waiver) reduces or eliminates that excess. For peace of mind, especially if new to left-hand driving, buy SCDW or full insurance.

What is the 'excess' in car rental insurance, and how should I handle it?

Excess is the maximum amount you pay if the car is damaged. For example, if excess is €1,500 and repairs cost €2,000, you pay €1,500. Buy SCDW or full insurance via QEEQ to reduce this to zero.

Do I need a credit card to rent a car in Malta? Can I use my Hungarian debit card?

Most Maltese rental companies require a credit card to freeze a deposit. Debit cards are usually not accepted for this purpose. Ensure your credit card has sufficient limit.

Are there any age restrictions for car rental in Malta?

Typically, the minimum age is 21. Drivers aged 21-24 may pay a young driver surcharge. Some companies may have extra requirements or fees for drivers over 70 or 75. Always check the policy during booking.

Can I add an additional driver to my rental agreement?

Yes. You can add extra drivers during booking or at the counter, usually for an extra daily fee. All drivers must be present and show their licenses. Unregistered drivers are not covered by insurance.

How do I book a child seat for my trip?

Add a child seat or booster during the booking process. Maltese law requires suitable restraints for children under 150 cm. Choose the correct type based on your child's age and weight.

What should I double-check on my QEEQ booking confirmation?

Verify pick-up/drop-off times and locations, car category, your name, included insurance, fuel policy (preferably 'full to full'), and rental company's contact info.

What happens if my flight is delayed?

Enter your flight number during booking so the rental company can track delays. If your flight is delayed, contact the rental company or QEEQ customer service as soon as possible. Most companies hold your car for a period after your scheduled arrival.

How do I find the rental car desk at Malta International Airport?

After collecting your luggage, follow signs to the 'Car Rental' area in the arrivals hall. All major companies are located there. If your provider is off-airport, look for shuttle bus instructions.

What if the rental desk tries to upsell me on extra insurance?

If you already purchased full insurance via QEEQ, politely decline further coverage. You can say, 'Thank you, I am already fully covered by my booking agent.' Be aware they may point out differences in deposit handling.

How much is the typical deposit when picking up a rental car?

If you don't have zero-excess insurance, the deposit usually equals the excess—often €800-2,000—frozen on your credit card. With full insurance, this drops to €200-300, just to cover fuel and fines.

What should I check during the vehicle inspection?

Record and photograph every scratch, dent, and chip, especially on bumpers, wheels, and doors. Check windscreen, tires, and interior. Ensure all pre-existing damage is documented and signed off by staff.

What should I do before driving off in my rental car?

Adjust the seat and mirrors, familiarize yourself with the dashboard, practice left-hand shifting if using a manual, set up your navigation, and rehearse using indicators and wipers (often reversed from Hungarian cars).

What is the 'fuel policy,' and what does 'full to full' mean?

'Full to full' means you pick up the car with a full tank and must return it full. This is the fairest and most economical policy. Avoid 'full to empty' options as they are more expensive.

What if my booked car model is unavailable at pick-up?

The rental company must provide a car of the same or higher class at no extra cost. If they offer a downgrade, you are entitled to a refund of the price difference.

What safety equipment should be in the car?

By law, the car should have a reflective vest and warning triangle. Double-check these are present before leaving the lot.

Can I use my own phone for navigation, or should I rent a GPS?

You can and should use your smartphone with Google Maps or Waze, which work well in Malta. Bring a phone holder and download offline maps in case of poor signal.

What contract terms should I pay special attention to?

Check your personal details, rental period, itemized fees, insurance coverage, and excess amount. Most importantly, ensure all pre-existing car damage is clearly listed in the inspection report.

What’s the best way for a Hungarian driver to adapt quickly to left-hand driving?

Remember: 'Driver stays in the middle of the road.' Repeat 'keep left' before every turn or roundabout. Take your time and practice in a quiet area before hitting busier roads.

How do I navigate roundabouts in Malta?

Yield to traffic on your right already inside the roundabout. Enter to the left, signal left only when preparing to exit. Use the correct lane: outer for first or second exit, inner for later exits, moving to the outer before leaving.

Are Maltese drivers aggressive or unpredictable?

Maltese drivers can be impatient, tailgate, and overtake unexpectedly. Practice defensive driving, keep calm, allow impatient drivers to pass, and don’t take honking personally.

What are the speed limits in Malta?

Unless posted otherwise: 50 km/h in urban areas, 80 km/h on main roads. Speed cameras are common—always obey speed limits.

What do the different colored parking bays mean in Malta?

White: free for anyone, possibly time-limited. Yellow: no parking. Green: residents only (usually 8am–6pm). Blue: timed free parking with a parking disc. Always check local signs.

Is it convenient to drive into Valletta?

No. Valletta has controlled vehicle access and few parking spaces. It's best to park in the Floriana MCP car park outside the city and walk or use public transport to enter.

What is the general road quality in Malta?

Main roads are decent, but many secondary and village roads are narrow, bumpy, and poorly lit. Always watch for potholes and obstacles.

Can I take my rental car on the Gozo ferry?

Yes, and it's recommended. Drive to Ċirkewwa, board the ferry with your car, and pay for the return trip in Gozo. Gozo's roads are quieter and great for self-driving.

Are there any unusual traffic signs in Malta to look out for?

Most signs are standard, but watch for Maltese-language signs like 'Għajr Għar-Residenti' (residents only) or 'Ħin Limitat' (time-limited). In narrow streets, look for 'Oncoming traffic has priority'.

What should I do if I meet another car on a very narrow street?

Whoever can reverse most easily or find a passing point should yield. As a visitor, it's best to be polite and offer to reverse or pull aside when possible.

Is night driving safe in Malta?

Main roads and towns are well lit, but rural roads can be very dark and tricky. If you’re not confident with left-hand driving, avoid country roads at night.

How do I avoid traffic congestion in Malta?

Avoid rush hours (7:30–9:30 and 16:30–18:30) in Sliema, St. Julian's, Gzira, and roads to Valletta. Use Waze or Google Maps to check real-time conditions.

Is it legal to use a mobile phone while driving in Malta?

No. Using a handheld phone while driving is illegal and subject to heavy fines. Use hands-free or Bluetooth devices only.

Are there many pedestrians and cyclists in Malta?

There are many pedestrians in tourist and urban areas; always yield at crosswalks. Cyclists are less common but roads are not very bike-friendly—drive carefully around them.

What should I do if I accidentally drive the wrong way down a one-way street?

Stop safely, turn on your hazard lights, and reverse or turn around as soon as it's safe. Locals are usually understanding in such situations.

How do I refuel in Malta? What are petrol and diesel called?

There are both full-service and self-service stations. Petrol is 'Unleaded' or 'Petrol' (green nozzle); diesel is 'Diesel' (black nozzle). Check your rental's fuel type carefully.

What should I do if I get into an accident in Malta?

Ensure everyone's safety and call 112 for emergencies. Park safely, turn on hazards, and place the warning triangle. Exchange details, take photos, fill out the accident form if minor, and contact your rental company immediately.

How do I handle a traffic fine or parking ticket as a rental driver?

If you receive a ticket, follow the instructions for payment at the local council or online. Fines may also be sent to your rental company, who will deduct them from your deposit with an admin fee.

What is the car return process, and what should I pay attention to?

Refuel the car as per the policy, keep the receipt, and return the car to the agreed location. Inspect the car with staff, take photos, and ensure the return form notes the car’s condition and full fuel tank. Collect a final statement.

When will my credit card deposit be released after car return?

After the car is inspected and no fines are pending, the rental company will instruct your bank to release the deposit. This usually takes 7–15 working days, but can be longer. Contact the company or your bank if not released after a month.
